Railways Crack Down on Overloaded Luggage at Surat’s Udhna Station; Drums and Heavy Items Seized

Surat, April 13, 2025 — In response to rising complaints about passengers carrying excessive and oversized luggage such as drums, buckets, and other bulky items in sleeper and general coaches, the Indian Railways launched a special enforcement drive at Udhna Railway Station on Saturday. During the operation, officials seized over a dozen drums, creating a stir among travelers.

According to railway authorities, many passengers have been disregarding luggage norms by carrying large and unwieldy items into passenger coaches. This practice not only causes inconvenience to fellow travelers but also poses serious safety risks by blocking emergency exits and passageways inside the train.

The crackdown was initiated following repeated complaints registered on the 'Rail Madad' portal, where travelers highlighted discomfort and unsanitary conditions caused by the presence of such items in passenger compartments. Passengers specifically reported that the limited space in general and sleeper coaches was being further cramped due to unauthorized heavy goods.

Railways have made it clear that passengers are allowed to carry only limited luggage, as per regulations. For transporting larger items, the use of parcel vans is advised. The recent operation was not the first of its kind—similar actions were carried out earlier in the week on Monday and Tuesday, resulting in the seizure of several such items.

In light of the ongoing violations, the Railway Department has now deployed special monitoring teams at Udhna station to conduct regular inspections. Passengers found flouting the rules will face penalties and confiscation of items.

The Railway administration has urged passengers to adhere to travel regulations and contribute to a safer and more comfortable journey for all.
