'Vatan Prem Yojana' Transforms Gujarat’s Rural Landscape Through NRI Contributions

Ahmedabad: Gujarat’s rural development is witnessing a significant transformation due to the impact of the state government's 'Vatan Prem Yojana', a scheme launched to encourage Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) of Gujarati origin to contribute towards the development of their ancestral villages through a public-private partnership model.

Initiated in 2021, the scheme allows NRIs to voluntarily donate funds for infrastructure development and school renovation projects in their native villages. As per agency report, the initiative has brought about noticeable changes, especially in the education and public infrastructure sectors.

In Kheda district, the village of Khadal has become a prime example of the scheme’s success. According to village sarpanch Phulsinh Jhala, the contributions received under the scheme have greatly benefited the community. With a donation of Rs. 72 lakh from NRIs, a new school has been established, now offering quality education to nearly 400 students. This success has also inspired neighboring villages to participate in similar developmental activities.

Similarly, the village of Uttarsanda in Kheda has received a significant donation of Rs. 9 crore from its overseas residents. These funds have been utilized for beautifying village ponds and constructing a modern bus stand, further enhancing the village’s infrastructure and public facilities.

Kaushikbhai Patel, one of the contributors to the Uttarsanda projects, emphasized that despite living abroad, the deep-rooted love for their homeland continues to inspire NRIs to give back to their roots. Their commitment to improving village life reflects a strong connection with their heritage and a desire to contribute to India’s grassroots development.

The 'Vatan Prem Yojana' thus stands as a symbol of how diaspora engagement can bring tangible improvements to rural India, fostering sustainable development and strengthening the bond between NRIs and their native land.
