Zaheer Khan Criticizes Lucknow Pitch After Loss, Says It Felt Like Punjab's Curator Prepared It
Lucknow, April 2 – Following Lucknow Super Giants’ second loss in three matches during the IPL 2025 season, team mentor and former India pacer Zaheer Khan expressed his frustration over the pitch conditions at the Ekana Stadium, indirectly blaming the surface for the defeat against Punjab Kings. Zaheer remarked that the pitch appeared to favor the visitors more than the home side, suggesting that it seemed as if Punjab’s own curator had prepared it.
As per agency report, Lucknow’s target of 172 runs was easily chased down by Punjab, who won the match by eight wickets, led by Prabhsimran Singh’s explosive 69 off 34 balls on a pitch that showed inconsistent bounce. Zaheer voiced his disappointment, emphasizing that home teams in the IPL usually benefit from familiar conditions, but that advantage seemed missing for Lucknow.
Expressing his concern, Zaheer noted that home fans were left disappointed as they came with the expectation of witnessing a win in the team’s first match at home. He stressed the importance of addressing the issue to avoid similar situations in future games, especially as Lucknow Super Giants aim to build a strong fan base and deliver positive results at their home ground.
Despite the defeat, Zaheer emphasized that the team’s focus would remain on the process rather than immediate results. He stated that the tournament is still in its early phase and that the team needs to work on certain aspects of their performance.
Zaheer, who previously served as the global head of cricket development for Mumbai Indians, also addressed concerns about player injuries. He clarified that while a few players are currently sidelined, the team has managed to make an impact with strong bowling performances. In their first two matches, Lucknow claimed 18 wickets, showcasing their intent and competitiveness.
He concluded by highlighting that the team is demonstrating resilience, strategic thinking, and a hunger to win—qualities they hope to continue offering to their supporters throughout the season.
