Rail Transport Brings Fresh Returns for South Gujarat Farmers with Successful Chikoo Shipment to Delhi
In a significant move to ensure better prices for farmers and timely delivery of fresh produce to distant markets, the Business Development Unit (BDU) of Western Railway’s Mumbai Central Division has successfully shifted the transportation of chikoos (sapodilla) from road to rail. This initiative marks a promising advancement for the agricultural economy of South Gujarat.
As per agency report, a special train was operated from Bilimora to Adarsh Nagar in Delhi, allowing farmers to fetch a fair price for their produce. The success came after extensive consultations between railway officials and cooperative societies in the Valsad and Navsari regions. Highlighting the benefits of rail transport, officials convinced the V.V.K.S. Khedut Mandali in Amalsad to ship around 35,000 boxes of chikoos via rail.
The journey, which takes approximately 35 hours by road, was completed in just 24 hours by train. This reduced transit time helped maintain the freshness of the fruit, enabling it to reach Delhi markets before opening hours, thereby ensuring premium value for the farmers.
Following the success of this pilot project, the Business Development Unit is now exploring similar arrangements with mango cooperative societies in anticipation of the upcoming mango season. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Indian Railways had already demonstrated its capability by transporting over 150 perishable cargo rakes under the Kisan Rail scheme, benefitting numerous farmers across the country.
Indian Railways continues to play a crucial role in supporting the agriculture-based economy. The shift from road to rail transport offers a faster, cost-effective, and eco-friendly solution that not only ensures better returns for farmers but also contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions.
