Supreme Court Dismisses Plea Seeking FIR Over Alleged Cash Recovery at Justice Verma’s Residence

New Delhi, March 28 – The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking directions to the Delhi Police to register a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the alleged recovery of a large sum of cash from the official residence of Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Verma, calling the petition premature.
A bench comprising Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan observed that an internal inquiry into the matter is already underway and that the Chief Justice of India (CJI) has several options available once the probe concludes.
As per agency report, the petition was filed by advocate Mathews J. Nedumpara along with three others. The court, however, declined to entertain it at this stage, stating that further action, including the potential filing of an FIR, could be considered after the inquiry’s findings are available.
The bench remarked that if necessary, the CJI may direct the registration of an FIR based on the outcome of the internal probe. “Why should we consider this matter today?” the court noted.
The controversy arose following a fire at Justice Verma’s government residence in Lutyens’ Delhi on the night of March 14, around 11:35 PM, after which a substantial amount of cash was reportedly found at the premises.
