SGCCI Hosts Dialogue on ‘One Nation, One Election’ and Its Impact on Industry in Surat

Surat: The South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) organized a dialogue session on March 20, 2025, at the Platinum Hall in Sarsana, focusing on the theme "One Nation, One Election and Its Impact on Industries." The event featured key addresses by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National General Secretary Sunil Bansal and Surat District Government Advocate and Public Prosecutor Nayan Sukhadwala.

SGCCI President Vijay Mevawala emphasized that the concept of "One Nation, One Election" represents a historic initiative for India's democratic and economic framework. He noted that this approach would significantly reduce administrative costs, bring policy stability, and promote industrial investment, thereby making business operations more efficient for traders and industrialists.

Speaking at the event, Sunil Bansal highlighted that the continuous cycle of elections often hinders developmental work. He explained that during elections, government officers and resources are heavily engaged, causing a delay in the implementation of policies. As per agency report, Bansal asserted that holding simultaneous elections would increase voter turnout, strengthen democratic processes, and lead to greater political stability and faster economic growth.

Public Prosecutor Nayan Sukhadwala pointed out the challenges faced by industries due to recurring elections. He stated that frequent elections compel migrant workers to return to their home states, which disrupts industrial production. The resulting drop in output contributes to rising inflation, negatively affecting economic stability. According to him, implementing a unified election system would also significantly reduce government expenditure on conducting elections.

Former SGCCI President and current BJP city president Paresh Patel recalled that India held its first five general elections simultaneously, but that system eventually changed. He remarked that frequent elections adversely impact industries and traders, and reinstating the earlier practice of simultaneous polls is essential for national development.

The session addressed the relevance of the "One Nation, One Election" proposal, analyzing its potential industrial and economic implications. Experts agreed that the model would ensure administrative continuity, reduce election-related expenses, and accelerate the country’s industrial growth.
