Shubman Gill Emphasizes Keeping Captaincy and Batting Separate for Team’s Best Interest

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill believes that a successful leader should keep captaincy and batting separate, as merging the two can sometimes be detrimental to the team's overall performance. As per agency report, Gill expressed this view during a pre-season media conference ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Gill took over the Gujarat Titans' captaincy from Hardik Pandya last season. Under Pandya’s leadership, the team played two consecutive finals in 2022 and 2023. However, in Gill’s first season as captain, the team finished in eighth place.

Discussing his approach, Gill stated that the more a player can separate captaincy from batting, the better it is for both personal and team performance. He emphasized that when he steps onto the field to bat, his entire focus remains on batting, as the decisions he makes as a batsman are different from those he makes as a captain. He explained that his engagement with captaincy is higher when the team is fielding, but while batting, he prefers to concentrate solely on his role as a batsman.

Gill also noted that captaincy is a continuous learning experience. He emphasized the importance of working on understanding both the team and oneself to become a better leader. His insights reflect his intent to refine his leadership while maintaining consistency in his batting performances for the Gujarat Titans in the upcoming IPL season.
