Roof Collapse in Karachi's Afghan Settlement Claims Six Lives
Karachi, March 10 – A tragic incident unfolded in an Afghan settlement on the outskirts of Karachi, where the roof of a house collapsed, resulting in the deaths of six people, including young children. According to officials, the collapse occurred late Saturday night while construction work was underway at the residence.
As per agency report, the affected area is one of the many Afghan refugee neighborhoods in Karachi, commonly referred to as "Afghan Basti." The house, which was in a deteriorated condition, could not withstand the construction work, leading to the collapse. The incident also left four others injured, including two children, with one in critical condition.
Police officials stated that at the time of the accident, ten family members were inside the house, asleep. Gulshan-e-Maymar police station’s officer-in-charge, Agha Asadullah, confirmed that four girls died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
Dr. Summaiya Syed, a police surgeon, provided details of the victims, revealing that the deceased girls were aged seven, eight, ten, fourteen, and twenty. Authorities have attributed the disaster to the poor structural condition of the house.
The incident has raised concerns over the safety of deteriorating structures in refugee settlements, with calls for better housing regulations and emergency preparedness in such high-risk areas. Rescue operations were swiftly carried out, and officials are now investigating further to assess any potential negligence in the ongoing construction work.
