Madan Soni and Aneesur Rahman Announced as Sahitya Akademi Translation Award Winners

The Sahitya Akademi has announced the winners of its prestigious Translation Awards for the year 2024. As per agency reports, renowned critic Madan Soni has been selected for the Hindi category, while Aneesur Rahman has been honored in the English category. The announcement was made on Friday following a meeting of the Akademi's executive board, presided over by its president, Madhav Kaushik. A total of 21 translators have been approved for the award this year.

According to an official release from the Sahitya Akademi, a three-member jury panel selected the winning books following the established evaluation process. However, the awards for translations in Nepali and Sanskrit will be announced later.

Madan Soni has been recognized for his Hindi translation of Yashodhara Dalmia’s English book Syed Haider Raza: Ek Apratim Kalakar Ki Yatra. In the English category, Aneesur Rahman has been awarded for his translation of Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi: The Wonderful World of Urdu Ghazals.

Among other awardees, Chandan Negi has been honored in the Punjabi category for his translation of Tere Layi, while Basudev Das received the Bengali award for Sadgarer Putra Nouka Bey Jay. Soibamcha Indrakumar won the Manipuri award for his translation of Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s famous poetry collection Madhubala.

Additionally, Anjan Sharma has been recognized for his Assamese translation of Kanak Lal Barua’s Early History of Kamarupa, and Archana Kesar has been awarded for her Dogri translation of Bhisham Sahni’s celebrated Hindi novel Tamas.

The awards are given to books published for the first time between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022. Other recipients include Uttara Biswomuthiyari (Bodo), Ramanik Agrawat (Gujarati), Siddhaling Pattanshetti (Kannada), Ghulam Nabi Aatash (Kashmiri), Milind Mahamal (Konkani), Keshkar Thakur (Maithili), KV Kumaran (Malayalam), Sudarshan Athavale (Marathi), Suvash Satpathy (Odia), Sohanadan Charan (Rajasthani), Nazeer Hembram (Santhali), the late Shobha Lalchandani (Sindhi), P Vimala (Tamil), and Turlapati Rajeshwari (Telugu).

Each awardee will receive an inscribed copper plaque and a cash prize of ₹50,000 in a special ceremony to be held later.
