Jan Aushadhi Diwas Reflects India's Commitment to Affordable Medicines: PM Modi

New Delhi, March 7 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing high-quality and affordable medicines to all citizens on the occasion of Jan Aushadhi Diwas. Observed annually on March 7, this day aims to raise awareness about the initiative and promote the use of generic medicines across the country.

As per agency reports, Jan Aushadhi Diwas is marked by week-long programs from March 1 to March 7 to support the initiative and encourage the accessibility of cost-effective medications. The prime minister highlighted the significance of this initiative through a message on social media, emphasizing that it underscores the nation’s dedication to ensuring a healthy and fit India by making affordable medicines accessible to the masses.

The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) was launched in November 2008 by the Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, in collaboration with central pharma public sector enterprises. The initiative aims to provide high-quality medicines at affordable prices through dedicated outlets known as Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJK).

Jan Aushadhi medicines are priced 50 to 80 percent lower than their branded counterparts in the open market, making them an essential alternative for those seeking cost-effective healthcare solutions. To ensure quality and safety, the medicines are procured only from manufacturers certified under the World Health Organization’s Good Manufacturing Practices (WHO-GMP).
