New Delhi, February 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday committed to expanding the India-European Union (EU) strategic partnership in defense, security, and critical technology. Both leaders directed their teams to finalize a comprehensive free trade agreement by the end of this year.
During a joint media address following their talks, Prime Minister Modi described the India-EU strategic partnership as "natural and organic," emphasizing its foundation on shared democratic values and mutual trust. Amid rising global concerns over trade and tariff policies, Modi stressed the importance of establishing a mutually beneficial bilateral free trade agreement within the stipulated timeline.
Modi stated that both sides are also advancing negotiations on an investment protection agreement and a separate agreement on geographical indicators, reflecting a broad-based approach to strengthening economic ties.
On connectivity, Modi highlighted progress on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC), stating that concrete steps will be taken to bring this ambitious project to life. "I am confident that the IMEEEC corridor will become an engine for global commerce, sustainable development, and prosperity," he said.
Describing von der Leyen’s visit to India along with the College of Commissioners as "unprecedented," Modi noted that both India and the EU share a common vision for peace, security, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. He added that several significant decisions have been made to deepen and accelerate the India-EU partnership.
Von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU’s intention to elevate its relationship with India to new heights, signaling strong bilateral cooperation in an evolving geopolitical landscape.
