Seventh Arrest Made in Gujarat Hospital CCTV Hacking Scandal Involving Sale of Female Patient Videos
Ahmedabad : The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Branch has arrested a seventh individual, Rohit Sisodia from Delhi, in connection with a scandal involving the alleged hacking of a hospital's CCTV system to obtain and sell videos of female patients online. The arrest brings the total number of individuals detained in the case to seven.
According to officials, Sisodia is accused of converting the hacked CCTV footage into QR codes and selling them to his accomplices. These accomplices then shared the videos on social media platforms such as YouTube and Telegram, allowing only subscribed users to access the content.
The investigation began on February 17 when the Cyber Crime Branch registered a case after discovering videos from a maternity ward, showing doctors examining female patients, on YouTube and Telegram channels. The explicit videos were reportedly available through paid subscriptions on these platforms.
The police had earlier arrested six individuals, including Parit Dhamelia, a hacker from Surat, and Prajwal Taili, a YouTube channel owner from Latur, Maharashtra. Authorities revealed that commerce graduate Dhamelia allegedly hacked into the CCTV system of a maternity home in Rajkot and shared the footage with Sisodia.
Sisodia then converted the videos into QR codes and sold them to Taili and others. Following this, the videos were shared across three YouTube channels, including Taili’s. The YouTube videos also included links to a Telegram channel where viewers were charged Rs. 2,000 per video.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime) Lavina Sinha disclosed that Dhamelia and his associate Ryan Pereira had allegedly hacked not only the maternity home in Rajkot but also approximately 50,000 CCTV cameras across hospitals, offices, schools, colleges, and even private bedrooms.
The scale and severity of the breach have raised significant concerns about cybersecurity and privacy, prompting authorities to widen their investigation to uncover the full extent of the network involved in this scandal.
