US President Trump Praises PM Modi, Strengthens India-US Ties

Washington, February 14 – During a high-profile meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in Washington, the American leader heaped praise on Modi and made efforts to seriously understand India's stance on various issues, officials said on Friday.

President Trump not only announced the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, but also expressed solidarity with India in the fight against radical Islamic terrorism. Speaking at a joint press conference with Modi, Trump stated that the US is handing over a violent individual to India and assured further action.

Despite his tough stance on trade tariffs, Trump displayed a conciliatory approach toward India, acknowledging that New Delhi alone is not responsible for trade practices affecting American businesses. His remarks suggested a softer stance towards India amid ongoing trade negotiations.

Referring to Modi as his old friend, Trump admitted that the Indian Prime Minister was a tougher and more skilled negotiator than himself. He said, “There is no competition; he is far better at negotiations than I am.”

The camaraderie between the two leaders was evident, with Trump commending Modi’s leadership in India. “Everyone talks about him. He is doing an incredible job. He is a great leader,” he said.

Welcoming Modi to the White House with a warm embrace, Trump remarked, “We missed you a lot.” He also presented Modi with a copy of his book, ‘Our Journey Together’, in which he wrote, “Prime Minister, you are great.”

The US President expressed excitement about hosting "his friend, Prime Minister Modi", and emphasized that Modi is a special individual.

The meeting, which covered key topics such as trade, security, and diplomatic relations, further solidified the growing strategic partnership between India and the United States.
