Delhi Assembly Elections: Campaigning Ends, Voting Set for February 5

New Delhi, February 3 – The high-pitched campaign for the Delhi Assembly elections came to an end at 6 PM on Monday, as major political parties made their final push with roadshows, rallies, and public meetings. The polling for 70 assembly seats will take place on February 5 from 7 AM onwards.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), confident of securing a third consecutive term, relied heavily on its welfare schemes and promises. On the final day of campaigning, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal addressed rallies in three constituencies, including Kalkaji, where Chief Minister Atishi is contesting.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), aiming to reclaim power in Delhi after more than 25 years, held 22 roadshows and rallies across the capital. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President J.P. Nadda, and several chief ministers led aggressive campaign efforts in a bid to unseat AAP.

Meanwhile, the Congress, which failed to win any seats in the last two elections, made a final push to regain lost ground. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra conducted roadshows in Kalkaji and Kasturba Nagar, appealing to voters for a comeback.

Voting and Security Arrangements

According to the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, over 1.56 crore voters will exercise their franchise across 13,766 polling stations. The electoral roll includes 83.76 lakh male voters, 72.36 lakh female voters, and 1,267 transgender voters.

To assist differently-abled voters, 733 polling stations have been designated. The Queue Management System (QMS) app has been introduced to provide real-time information about polling station crowd levels.

For senior citizens and differently-abled voters, a home voting facility was introduced. Out of 7,553 eligible voters, 6,980 have already cast their votes. This service, which began on January 24, will continue until February 4.

Law and Order Measures

Delhi Police has registered over 1,000 cases of alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which came into effect on January 7. Authorities have arrested 33,434 individuals for violating election-related laws.

To ensure free and fair elections, the Election Commission has deployed:

  • 220 companies of paramilitary forces
  • 19,000 home guards
  • 35,626 Delhi Police personnel

Additionally, over 21,500 ballot units and VVPAT machines have been set up for polling.

The counting of votes and results for the Delhi Assembly elections will be declared on February 8.
