Significance of the Festival
The Uttarardh Festival coincides with the period after Uttarayan (Makar Sankranti), marking the Sun's northward journey and the end of winter as days become longer. Historically, the festival was celebrated in the ancient city of Modhera to honor the architectural and astronomical genius of the Modhera Sun Temple, built to align with celestial movements.
The festival underscores the guru-shishya (teacher-student) tradition of Indian classical dances, aiming to preserve and promote these art forms among the masses.
A Celebration of Culture and Heritage
The two-day festival will showcase spellbinding performances from classical dance maestros across the country, transforming the temple complex into a vibrant celebration of Indian heritage. Since 1992, the Uttarardh Festival has been jointly organized by the State Department of Sports, Youth, and Cultural Activities in collaboration with the District Administration, with a mission to celebrate and propagate the richness of Indian classical dance forms.
