Islamabad, January 16 – A boat carrying 80 migrants, including 66 Pakistanis, capsized off the coast of Morocco while en route to Spain, leaving over 40 Pakistanis dead. Authorities and migrant rights group 'Walking Borders' provided updates on the tragic incident on Thursday.

Details of the Incident

The ill-fated boat, which departed from Mauritania on January 2, was carrying 86 migrants, mostly from Pakistan. Moroccan authorities managed to rescue 36 individuals from the boat a day earlier. However, over 50 migrants are feared drowned.

Confirmation of Pakistani Casualties

Helena Maleno, CEO of 'Walking Borders,' confirmed via social media platform 'X' that among the deceased, 44 were Pakistani nationals. The group emphasized the harrowing conditions migrants face while attempting perilous journeys to Europe in search of better opportunities.

Broader Context

This tragedy highlights the ongoing crisis of illegal migration, as many individuals from Pakistan and other countries attempt to reach Europe through dangerous sea routes. The lure of better economic prospects often leads migrants to undertake such risky voyages.

Efforts are underway to confirm the identities of the deceased and provide assistance to the survivors. Both Moroccan and Pakistani authorities are collaborating to manage the aftermath of this catastrophic event.
