New Timings Set for Surat-Mumbai Parcel Services to Address Labor Concerns
Surat, January 18 – The Surat textile market, known for its massive daily shipment of parcels to Mumbai, has recently seen a resolution between labor unions and the Angadiya Welfare Association over parcel acceptance timings. This decision aims to address growing tensions between parcel workers and Angadiya operators regarding late-night work hours.
Revised Parcel Booking Hours
In a significant meeting held on Thursday between the Surat District Textile Marketing Transport Labor Union and the Angadiya Welfare Association, it was unanimously decided that Mumbai-bound Angadiya services will accept parcels between 1 PM and 12 midnight. No parcels will be accepted after midnight, bringing clarity and fairness to the process.
Reason Behind the Change
Labor Concerns: Union President Umashankar Mishra and spokesperson Shaan Khan highlighted the excessive burden on laborers. “Workers often have to work until 2-3 AM, reach home late, and manage only a few hours of rest. This situation was exploitative and unsustainable. Setting strict timings was essential to ensure their well-being,” they stated.
Operational Challenges: Angadiya Association President Ganesh Pandey emphasized that late parcel acceptance delays vehicle departures from Surat, causing Mumbai deliveries to be delayed. This not only disrupts operations but also leads to logistical and financial challenges for Angadiya operators.
Key Attendees
The meeting saw participation from representatives of both the labor union and Angadiya Association, including:
Labor Union: Devprakash Pandey, Rahul Pandey, Rinku Dubey, Bhupendra Pandey, D.N. Tiwari, Santosh Mishra (Pappu).
Angadiya Association: Ramdular Singh, Abhay Pandey, Vikas Pandey, Lallan Pandey, Pankaj Tiwari.
Impact of the Decision
This new timetable is expected to:
Improve Work-Life Balance: Laborers will now have more reasonable working hours, reducing health and safety risks associated with late-night work.
Streamline Operations: The decision ensures timely departure of vehicles, enabling more efficient parcel delivery to Mumbai.
Both the labor union and Angadiya operators have welcomed the resolution, hoping it sets a precedent for fair practices in the Surat-Mumbai parcel service industry.
