Delhi Police Arrests 540 Fraudsters at IGI Airport in 2024, Doubling Last Year's Tally
New Delhi, December 12 – Delhi Police has arrested 540 individuals this year for duping passengers outside the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, more than doubling the arrests from last year’s total of 264. Officials provided the statistics on Wednesday, highlighting a significant crackdown on illegal activities targeting unsuspecting travelers.
Unethical Practices Endanger Travelers
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI) Usha Rangnani, the accused were involved in misleading passengers into using unauthorized services, such as unlicensed taxis, accommodations, or shopping deals. Rangnani stated, “These activities not only tarnish the reputation of the airport and the nation but also pose serious risks to passenger safety.”
Seized Vehicles and Regional Breakdown
This year, 254 vehicles used in these fraudulent operations have been confiscated, a sharp increase compared to 96 in 2023. Of those arrested, 373 individuals hail from Delhi, while others are from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, and Sikkim.
Targeting Vulnerable Travelers
An official explained that the culprits often preyed on unfamiliar passengers, particularly during nighttime, posing as taxi drivers and offering cheap services. These deceptive tactics frequently led to harassment, financial exploitation, and safety threats for travelers.
The substantial increase in arrests and vehicle seizures underscores the intensified efforts of the Delhi Police to curb fraudulent activities and ensure a safer experience for passengers at one of India’s busiest airports.
