India to Finalize Deal for 26 Rafale-M Jets and Additional Scorpene Submarines: Navy Chief

New Delhi, December 2 - Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi announced on Monday that India is set to finalize contracts for the procurement of 26 Rafale-M fighter jets and three additional Scorpene-class submarines, with an agreement expected to be signed soon. These acquisitions aim to bolster the Navy’s capabilities in maritime defense.

Speaking at a press briefing ahead of Navy Day, Admiral Tripathi highlighted that the government’s recent approval for two indigenous SSNs (nuclear-powered submarines) demonstrates confidence in India’s domestic shipbuilding and technological expertise. He also emphasized that 62 ships and one submarine are currently under construction as part of the Navy’s modernization efforts.

Admiral Tripathi revealed that several of these vessels will be inducted into service within the next year, with at least one ship being commissioned soon. “We have doubled our efforts to integrate advanced technologies into the Navy,” he said.

The deal for the Rafale-M, a naval variant of the fighter jet, and Scorpene submarines is anticipated to be finalized by next month. The Rafale-M jets will primarily be deployed aboard the indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, enhancing the Navy’s operational capabilities. The Defense Ministry had approved the acquisition of the Rafale-M jets from France in July last year.

Addressing concerns about Pakistan’s efforts to expand its maritime strength, Admiral Tripathi assured that the Indian Navy is well-prepared to counter any potential threats from neighboring nations.
