Passenger Vehicle Sales Surge in November on Wedding Season Demand and SUV Popularity

New Delhi, December 1: Major automakers Maruti Suzuki India, Tata Motors, and Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported growth in domestic passenger vehicle (PV) sales in November, driven by the ongoing wedding season, strong demand in rural markets, and the rising popularity of SUVs. However, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) saw a slight dip in its domestic sales.

Maruti Suzuki India Reports 5% Growth

Maruti Suzuki India registered a 5% increase in PV sales, with 141,312 units sold in November compared to 134,158 units in the same month last year. Senior Executive Officer for Marketing and Sales, Partho Banerjee, attributed this growth to factors such as the wedding season, increased demand in rural areas, and limited edition models. The company’s rural outreach grew by 2.2% to 48.7% this year.

While rural demand remained strong, urban sales showed a slowdown. “Urban customers often wait for December for better year-end offers,” Banerjee added.

  • Small cars such as Alto and S-Presso sold 9,750 units in November, slightly down from 9,959 units last year.
  • Compact cars, including Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, Tour S, and WagonR, saw a decline in sales to 61,373 units from 64,679 units last year.
  • SUVs and multipurpose vehicles like Brezza, Ertiga, Grand Vitara, and XL6 surged to 59,003 units, up from 49,016 units.
  • The Eeco van recorded sales of 10,589 units, up from 10,226 units.
  • Light commercial vehicle Super Carry saw sales rise to 2,926 units from 2,509 units.

Tata Motors and Toyota See Gains

Tata Motors reported a 2% increase in domestic PV sales, including EVs, with 47,063 units sold in November compared to 46,068 units last year.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) recorded a robust 44% growth in overall sales, reaching 25,586 units compared to 17,818 units in the same period last year. Sabri Manohar, TKM’s Vice President, highlighted their diverse portfolio catering to various lifestyles.

Hyundai and MG Motor Witness Mixed Results

Hyundai Motor India’s domestic sales declined by 2% to 48,246 units from 49,451 units last year. Its exports fell by 20% to 13,006 units in November. Despite this, the company achieved its highest-ever monthly rural contribution at 22.1%, reflecting deeper penetration into rural markets.

MG Motor India recorded a 20% increase in wholesale sales, with 6,019 units sold in November. The company’s electric crossover utility vehicle, Windsor, maintained strong performance with 3,144 units sold for the second consecutive month.

The overall performance in November highlights the varying dynamics of urban and rural markets, with SUVs and electric vehicles emerging as significant growth drivers.
