Ancient Baobab Tree Faces Threat from Metro Construction in Surat
Environmentalists and Local Residents Unite to Save One of the City's Last Four Chor Amlo Trees
Surat – A 702-year-old Chor Amlo Baobab tree, one of only four left in the city, faces the threat of being cut down to make way for a new metro line in Adajan. Distressed locals and environmentalists are banding together to present an alternative to the Municipal Corporation in an effort to save this rare tree.
The Baobab tree, native to Africa, is known for its unique hollow trunk, making it easy for people to hide inside. This ancient tree, locally known as 'Chor Amlo', has long been treasured by the people of Surat. However, the scarcity of saplings in the area has heightened concerns among environmentalists over the tree's possible removal.
Snehal Patel, a local environmental enthusiast, expressed disappointment about the potential loss of the Chor Amlo tree. In response, community members are planning a meeting at the site to discuss ways to preserve the tree. They intend to present their proposal to Municipal Corporation officials and office bearers, including Metro representatives, in the coming days.
