Over 2.1 Million Tourists Visit Gujarat’s Heritage Sites During World Heritage Week

Gandhinagar, November 24: Gujarat, known for its rich cultural and historical heritage, has emerged as a prime destination for tourists, with over 2.1 million visitors exploring the state’s iconic heritage sites during the 2023-24 period. As part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Week, celebrated annually from November 19 to November 25, Gujarat is showcasing its commitment to preserving its legacy. This year’s theme, "Exploring and Experiencing Diversity," aligns with the state’s efforts to develop and promote its heritage.

According to the Gujarat Tourism Department, the state government, under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has undertaken development projects worth over ₹428 crore to enhance facilities at heritage sites. Initiatives such as night tourism and light-and-sound shows have further attracted domestic and international tourists.

Vadnagar: A Hub of Historical and Cultural Significance

Vadnagar, the birthplace of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is a key focus of Gujarat’s heritage development. Over the past three years, the state government has invested ₹70 crore to create modern tourism infrastructure in Vadnagar. Visitor numbers have seen a dramatic rise from 2.45 lakh in 2022-23 to approximately 7 lakh in 2023-24.

Dholavira: Showcasing Indus Valley Civilization

The UNESCO-listed site of Dholavira, renowned for its Indus Valley heritage, is undergoing development worth ₹185 crore. Under Phase 1, ₹76 crore has already been utilized for infrastructure improvements. Tourist numbers at Dholavira more than doubled, from 1.41 lakh in 2022-23 to over 2.32 lakh in 2023-24, reflecting growing global interest in the site.

Other Key Heritage Sites Witness Growth

  • Sun Temple, Modhera: ₹20 crore invested; visitors increased from 3.78 lakh to 3.81 lakh.
  • Rani Ki Vav, Patan: ₹18 crore invested; visitors grew from 3.52 lakh to 3.83 lakh.
  • Adalaj Stepwell: ₹5 crore invested; visitors rose from 3.72 lakh to 3.86 lakh.

In addition to these, restoration of historical forts is a priority. Projects include the ₹74 crore restoration of Uparkot Fort in Junagadh, ₹21 crore for Amreli’s Rajmahal, and ₹25 crore for Lakhpat Fort.

National Recognition and Future Plans

On World Tourism Day 2024, Gujarat’s Hafezpur Village was honored as the Best Tourism Village in the Heritage Category. To enhance the tourist experience, the state government plans to invest ₹10 crore in developing facilities at the village.

These efforts by the Gujarat government underscore its dedication to preserving historical monuments and promoting sustainable tourism, ensuring these sites remain a source of pride and learning for future generations.
