India's President Droupadi Murmu Highlights Welfare of Indian Diaspora and Strengthening India-Malawi Ties

Lilongwe (Malawi), October 19 : On the final leg of her three-nation African tour, India's President Droupadi Murmu emphasized that the welfare of Indians living abroad is a top priority for her government. She reaffirmed the government's commitment to working with international partners to address the concerns of the Indian diaspora and ensure their safety, well-being, and progress.

President Murmu stressed the importance of India's partnership with the African continent, which is based on mutual trust, equality, and shared benefits. She said that India's model of cooperation with Africa focuses on utilizing local resources and capacity building, with the priorities determined by African nations themselves.

"As a leading member of the Global South, India takes its role seriously in representing the interests of two-thirds of the world's population," she remarked during her address in Malawi. She expressed her delight in being present among the Indian community in Malawi, noting the deep cultural and historical ties between the two nations, as they mark 60 years of diplomatic relations.

President Murmu was warmly welcomed by Malawi's President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera at the State House. Both leaders discussed ways to further strengthen the bilateral relationship between India and Malawi, along with several other key issues. 

During her visit to Lilongwe, President Murmu paid homage at the National War Memorial, laying a wreath in honor of the soldiers and civilians who sacrificed their lives during the First and Second World Wars and other military operations. She also paid tribute to the Indian soldiers whose sacrifices are commemorated at the memorial. Additionally, President Murmu laid flowers at the tomb of Malawi's first President, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, acknowledging his contribution to the nation.
