Surat Wins National Water Award 2023 for Best Urban Body

Surat: The city of Surat has been awarded the prestigious National Water Award 2023 in the Best Urban Body category for its outstanding work in water conservation and management. This recognition follows Surat's previous achievements, including being ranked first in cleanliness last year and topping the Clean Air Survey last month. Now, Surat's efforts in the area of clean water have earned widespread praise across the country.

Known as the Diamond City, Textile City, and City of Flyovers, Surat has gained recognition both nationally and internationally for its accomplishments. The city has now secured the top position in the National Water Award 2023 for its exemplary work in water management, including tertiary treatment initiatives. On October 22, President Droupadi Murmu will present the trophy and prize to Surat Mayor Dakshesh Mawani and Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti, under the Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation, announced the winners of the 5th National Water Award. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) submitted its entry under the Best Urban Local Body category, highlighting its Tertiary Treatment Plant Conservation of Natural Resources and Making System Self-Sustainable through the Sale of Treated Wastewater.

Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal explained that through the tertiary treatment plant, industrial wastewater is treated and made reusable. Around 115 million liters per day (MLD) of treated water is supplied back to industries, generating an annual revenue of ₹141 crore. Additionally, 414 government and 415 non-government locations have reserved borewells, which recharge the underground water supply.

This recognition highlights Surat’s commitment to sustainable water management and conservation efforts.
