Surat’s Textile Industry: Wholesale and Retail Business Thrives Despite Fluctuating Demand

Mixed Outlook for Festive Season Sales as Ready-Made Garment Business Grows

Surat’s Textile Industry: Wholesale and Retail Business Thrives Despite Fluctuating Demand

Surat: Known as the textile hub, Surat is home to both wholesale and retail businesses dealing with various types of clothing. While the markets on Ring Road are famous for the wholesale trade of sarees and suits, the industrial units around the city are gradually expanding into wholesale ready-made garment businesses. Many saree and suit traders are now turning to ready-made garments. Manufacturers send their products to wholesalers, who then supply them to retail shops across different parts of the city, ultimately reaching the general public through these retail outlets.

Due to the availability of all types of raw materials, Surat produces a wide range of apparel, including women's kurtis, men's kurtas, shirting-suiting, jeans, lehengas, lycra fabrics, and various clothing items for children.

Low Demand with Few Hopes for Diwali Sales: Dhaval Mehta

Dhaval Mehta, owner of Lado Design Studio, a retail ready-made garment shop located in Regent Mall on Ghoddod Road, shared that the market has been slow lately, with only a few customers visiting the shops. He mentioned that while there was good business before Navratri, expectations for continued sales during and after the festival were not met. Regarding Diwali sales, Dhavalbhai stated, "With only a few days left until Diwali, we do not anticipate much demand. Most women complete their shopping at least a week before festivals or special occasions, so it's unlikely that we’ll see a significant rise in sales during Diwali."

Strong Demand This Year: Bharatbhai

On the other hand, Bharatbhai, a wholesale ready-made garment trader from Somnath Gali in Udhna, reported positive business trends. He said, "We manufacture only T-shirts, which are supplied to markets in Surat and surrounding areas. Our products range from Rs. 70 to Rs. 300, and compared to last year, demand has been much better this year." Bharatbhai acknowledged that while retail outlets may be experiencing slow customer footfall, wholesale businesses are seeing consistent sales.

Overall, while some sectors of Surat's textile industry are witnessing slow demand, others, particularly in wholesale, are enjoying strong business. The outlook for Diwali sales remains uncertain, with mixed opinions on whether the festive season will bring a significant boost in customer activity.
