New Delhi, Sept 30: Renowned actor Mithun Chakraborty will be honored with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award for the year 2022. The award will be presented to him on October 8 at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony, recognizing his exceptional contribution to Indian cinema.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Railways, and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the award on Monday, congratulating Chakraborty for his charismatic screen presence and versatile acting career. Vaishnaw praised Mithun's journey from humble beginnings to becoming a legendary figure in Indian cinema, highlighting the actor’s dedication, perseverance, and passion as an inspiration to emerging talents.

Mithun Chakraborty, often referred to as Mithun Da, is celebrated not only as an actor but also as a producer and politician. He is particularly recognized for his distinctive dance style and wide-ranging roles in cinema, from action-packed performances to deeply emotional characters.

Mithun's Journey in Cinema

Born on June 16, 1950, in Kolkata, West Bengal, Gouranga Chakraborty, better known as Mithun, made his cinematic debut with Mrigayaa (1976), for which he won his first National Film Award for Best Actor. An alumnus of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Mithun sharpened his craft and laid the foundation for a remarkable career in Indian cinema.

Rise to Stardom with Disco Dancer

In the 1980s, Mithun shot to unparalleled fame with his iconic role in Disco Dancer (1982). The film was a massive success both in India and internationally, cementing Mithun’s reputation as an exceptional dancer and actor. His performance in the movie brought the disco genre to mainstream Indian cinema. Beyond dance, Mithun's portrayal of diverse characters made him a household name.
