Rain Disrupts Play on Day 1 of the Second Test Between India and Bangladesh
Kanpur – The first day of the second Test match between India and Bangladesh was cut short due to rain, allowing only 35 overs of play, which lasted for 166 minutes.
At the close of play, Bangladesh had scored 107 for 3 in their first innings. Mominul Haque was unbeaten on 40, and Mushfiqur Rahim was at the crease with 6 runs.
Due to overnight rain, the start of the match was delayed, and play began about an hour late. India won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Despite the overcast conditions, Bangladesh managed a steady session in the morning. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (28*) and Mominul Haque (17*) put up a resilient 45-run partnership in challenging circumstances, offering some stability to Bangladesh's innings.
Although the pitch had grass, the black soil beneath made the surface slow and with less bounce. India's pace duo, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, tried to exploit the conditions, swinging the new ball early on.
Bangladesh openers Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan had some close calls but looked relatively comfortable against the new ball until debutant Akash Deep made an impact. In his first over, Deep removed Zakir (00), who was caught in the gully by Yashasvi Jaiswal. Soon after, he trapped Shadman (24) leg-before-wicket, giving India two quick breakthroughs.
Mominul Haque and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto then steadied the innings, adding 51 runs for the third wicket. However, just as Bangladesh began to rebuild, Ravichandran Ashwin struck, dismissing Najmul Hossain Shanto lbw for 31, leaving Bangladesh at 80 for 3.
Mominul and Mushfiqur then guided Bangladesh past the 100-run mark before bad light halted play. Heavy rain followed, leading to the abandonment of the day's play after 35 overs.
Day 2 is expected to resume with Bangladesh at 107 for 3, with hopes of clearer skies and uninterrupted play.
