VVS Laxman Extends Tenure as Head of National Cricket Academy
Laxman’s Extension Coincides with the Upcoming Launch of the New State-of-the-Art NCA Complex
New Delhi – VVS Laxman, the former Indian cricket legend, has confirmed that he will extend his tenure as the head of the Bengaluru-based National Cricket Academy (NCA) for at least another year. Laxman’s initial three-year contract was set to expire in September, but the decision to prolong his leadership aligns with the NCA's developmental plans.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Laxman was a potential candidate for a head coaching role with an IPL franchise. However, his commitment to the NCA’s objectives has taken precedence, eliminating the possibility of transitioning to the IPL at this time. Assisting him in his role will be a team of experienced coaches, including Indian domestic cricket veterans Shitanshu Kotak, Sairaj Bahutule, and Rishikesh Kanitkar.
Laxman's contract extension is timely, as it coincides with the anticipated inauguration of a new, state-of-the-art NCA complex on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The foundation for this ambitious project was laid in January 2022, following a 14-year wait after the Karnataka government approved the land on a 99-year lease.
The new NCA facility promises to be a comprehensive training hub with at least 100 pitches, indoor facilities featuring 45 pitches, three international-sized grounds, a cutting-edge rehabilitation center, accommodation facilities, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool, among other amenities. The complex is in the final stages of construction and is expected to become operational early next year.
One of the critical challenges for Laxman will be to continue the expansive India A tour program, which was initiated during Rahul Dravid's tenure. This program has faced obstacles due to a hectic international cricket schedule.
During his first three-year term, Laxman has focused on establishing robust processes for injury management, player rehabilitation, and coaching programs. He has also developed strategic roadmaps for senior, age-group, and women's cricket teams, contributing significantly to the NCA's holistic development agenda.
