Vinesh Phogat Disqualified Before Paris Olympics Wrestling Final

New Delhi, August 07 (HS). Indian female wrestler Vinesh Phogat has suffered a major setback, being eliminated before the final match of the women's 50 kg weight category at the Paris Olympics 2024. Phogat was disqualified for being overweight before the final match, despite her semi-final victory against Cuba's Yusnelis Guzman Lopez, which she won 5-0 on Tuesday. This victory had made her the first Indian female wrestler to reach the Olympic final.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed the disqualification, expressing sadness over the incident. "Despite the best efforts made by the team overnight, she weighed a few grams more than 50 kg this morning. No further comment will be made by the team at this time. The Indian team requests you to respect Vinesh's privacy. She would like to focus on the competitions ahead," stated the IOA.

Phogat was scheduled to face American wrestler Sarah Hildebrand in the final match, set to be held at 12:30 am on August 8.
