Vadorara : Karjan Taluka: Blossoming with Fragrant Rose Cultivation

Karjan taluka in Vadodara district has gained recognition not only for its historical significance but also for its flourishing rose cultivation. About 85% of the farmers in this region are engaged in growing roses, earning lakhs annually.

Cultivation of Kashmiri and Desi Roses:

Two main types of roses are cultivated in Karjan taluka: the Kashmiri rose and the Desi rose. The Kashmiri rose, known for its large and fine petals, is highly demanded for making Gulkand. In contrast, Desi roses are prized for their durability.

Success Story of Farmers:

Kanchanbhai Machhi, a resident of Kothiya village in Karjan taluka, has been cultivating Kashmiri roses for the past six years. His three bigha land is filled with the fragrance of roses, and he sells up to 60 kg of roses daily in Vadodara markets. During festive seasons, rose prices soar to Rs 200 to Rs 300 per kg. Kanchanbhai's rose cultivation yields an annual income of Rs 4 to 5 lakh.

Source of Earning Lakhs:

In Vadodara district, roses are cultivated over 660 hectares, with 270 hectares dedicated to rose farming in Karjan taluka. Additionally, flowers like marigold, mogra, lily, jasmine, gladiolus, and tuberose are grown across more than 2,000 hectares in the district. Flower cultivation has become a significant source of income for farmers.

The Fragrance of Roses Spreads Far and Wide:

Roses grown in Karjan taluka are sold in major markets in cities like Vadodara, Surat, and Ahmedabad. Furthermore, large traders distribute these roses to metros such as Mumbai and Delhi, spreading the fragrance of Karjan's roses far and wide.
