Man gets lifer for wife's murder in Hooghly

Hooghly, 11 July (HS): Chuchura District Court of Hooghly found a man guilty of murdering his wife on the testimony of his minor son and rewarded him life imprisonment on Thursday.

Chuchura Court's public prosecutor Shankar Gangopadhyay said, ''The Court has sentenced the accused to life imprisonment. In this case, the testimony of deceased Sabina Begum's 13-year-old son Sahil was very important.

When he was six-year-old, he had given a secret statement in front of the judge. And he also testified at the age of thirteen. On Wednesday, Hooghly District Court's Third Additional Sessions Judge Kaustab Mukherjee convicted Sheikh Najibul.''

''In the case of section 498/A, the accused was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment and a fine of five thousand rupees and in the case of section 302,201, rigorous life imprisonment and a fine of ten thousand rupees,'' he added.

Notably, Sabina Begum of Chak-Sultan village of Dhaniakhali was married to Najibul in the month of Baisakh in 2006. They have two children, a boy and a girl. After a few years of marriage, Najibul had an extramarital affair with a local woman. This created a ruckus. The incident happened on 25 August 2015. At that time the elder son Sheikh Sahil was 6-year-old, the daughter was 2-year-old. That night Najibul killed Sabina Begum by strangulating her with a pillow. Both the son and daughter failed to stop their father.

Based on the complaint of Sabina's father Motihar Rahman, the police of Dhaniakhali police station arrested him on the same day and started investigating the incident. The police completed the investigation and filed a chargesheet under sections 498/A, 302, 201 IPC on 23 December 2015 and the trial process began. On April 12, 2022, Sahil gave a confidential statement to the magistrate. A total of 12 people were testified in connection with the case.
