1500 Cusecs Released to Improve Water Quality and Address Drinking Water Concerns

Surat Authorities Release Water from Ukai Dam to Combat Tapi River Pollution

Surat - The quality of water in the Tapi River has deteriorated due to a decrease in water levels, resulting in complaints of contaminated water throughout the city. To address the issue, 1500 cusecs of water have been released from the Ukai Dam, leading to an increase in the Tapi River's water level on the weir-cum-causeway.

Over the past several days, residents from more than 50% of the city, including areas like Katargam, Wade Road, Sumul Dairy Road, Ashwinikumar Road, Pal, Rander, Udhna, Bhestan, and Laldarwaja, have been troubled by dirty and tasteless water. In some areas, the Municipal Corporation discovered insects emerging from the water. The Hydraulics Department attributed the decline in water quality to the Tapi River's water level falling below 5 meters on the weir-cum-causeway.

The Ukai Dam has ample water reserves, and when water levels are low, the Municipal Corporation writes a letter to the Irrigation Department to request the release of water. The water department took action after receiving complaints about green, smelly, and chlorinated water from citizens. Consequently, 1500 cusecs of water have been released from the Ukai Dam.

Due to the release of water from the dam, the Tapi River's water level near Kojve has increased to 5.25 meters and is expected to rise to 5.40 meters in the next two days. The Hydraulics Department has confirmed that the water problem has been resolved.
