Residents Demand Housing or Rent as SMC Moves to Cut Connections

Surat : Tensions Rise Over Tenement Evictions

Surat - The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) team arrived at Mandarwaja Tenement today to cut the tap and drainage connections due to the dilapidated state of the building. Following the end of the notice period, tensions flared as local residents, citing financial constraints, demanded housing or rental assistance instead of eviction.

The residents voiced their frustrations, stating that their poor financial conditions make it impossible to rent or buy new homes. They urged the Municipal Corporation to either provide alternative housing or financial support for rent.

The situation has been exacerbated by the arrival of the monsoon season. The SMC had issued a verbal notice a week ago, warning residents of the imminent demolition due to the building's unsafe condition. Despite the risks, many residents have refused to leave their homes.

When the notice period expired, officials and employees from the Limbayat Zone arrived to disconnect the water and drainage systems. The move prompted an uproar from the residents, who refused to vacate the premises until their demands for housing or rent were met.

As of now, the standoff continues, with tensions high between the municipal officials and the residents.
