Rajkot: Passenger passage canopy breaks at Hirasar airport; major accident averted

Rajkot, June 29 (HS): The canopy built for passengers at the Greenfield International Airport in Hirasar, Rajkot, broke on Saturday morning. Rajkot has been receiving heavy rains with strong winds for the last two days. It was told that the canopy broke due to this. A major accident was averted as there were no passengers under the canopy.

Rajkot Hirasar Airport Director Digant Bahora said that water had accumulated on the canopy due to rain, due to which it broke. The accident took place outside the temporary terminal. No one was injured in the incident.

According to the information, it has been raining with strong winds in Rajkot since Friday. The rain continued on Saturday morning as well. It was also raining between 11 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. On the other hand, questions are being raised about the quality of the canopy, etc., regarding its breaking.

Greenfield Airport was inaugurated by PM Modi.Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated an international airport near Rajkot city in Gujarat on July 27, 2023. It is the first greenfield airport in the state and has been built at a cost of Rs 1,405 crore. The airport campus located at Hirasar village, about 30 km from Rajkot, is spread over an area of 1,025.50 hectares (2,534 acres), out of which the Airports Authority of India has built the airport in an area of 1,500 acres. PM Modi laid the foundation stone for this international airport in Hirasar village near Rajkot city in October 2017.
