Nine arrested in GU marksheet scam

Guwahati, 29 June (HS). Nine accused of the Guwahati University marksheet scam have been arrested in a joint operation by Barpeta Road Police and CID. It is noteworthy that marks were illegally increased in the marksheets of students by taking bribes.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma took the issue seriously in Barpeta and entrusted the CID with the task of investigating it. He said that Barpeta Police and CID are jointly investigating the matter.

It is known that this scam came to light when the officials of Ganeshlal Choudhary College (GLC College) located on Barpeta Road revealed the discrepancy in the marks of Azizul Haque, a sixth year undergraduate student. A case was immediately registered at the Barpeta Road police station, although the Barpeta police were accused of covering it up. Because the accused was released from custody.

After the issue was raised by the local media, the Chief Minister ordered an investigation into the matter. The investigation has revealed the involvement of several employees of the university and colleges. Those arrested include Krishnan Krishnamurthy, employed at Guwahati University, and Sivatosh Mahato, a junior computer assistant at Dhubri Law College. The arrests were made in a joint raid by the Barpeta and Dhubri police. The nine accused include Azizul Haque, Krishnan Krishnamurthy (Gauhati University employee), Ismail Hussain (Kalgachhia), Alamgir Khan (Amguri, Kalgachhia), Moinul Haque (Bardanga, Kalgachhia), Hameez Uddin (Nagaon), Aminul Islam (librarian, Langla College), Sivatosh Mahato (junior computer assistant, Dhubri Law College) and Abul Bakar (Langla, Kalgachhia).

A case has been registered against the accused under several sections of the law. More arrests are likely. However, the police are refraining from saying anything in this case.
