Surat Plans to Buy 16 New Sweeper Machines
Proposal submitted to Standing Committee for approval to maintain top cleanliness ranking
After securing the first position among the cleanest cities in the country in the Swachhta Survey, Surat Municipal Corporation is committed to retaining this top ranking. To further enhance the cleanliness of the city's roads, the Municipal Corporation plans to buy 16 new sweeper machines. This proposal, costing over Rs 125 crore, has been submitted to the Standing Committee for approval.
Surat and Indore jointly held the first position in the Swachhta Survey, and Surat Municipal Corporation is dedicated to maintaining this achievement. Currently, 28 sweeper machines clean the city's roads. Mechanical cleaning systems are highly rated in the Swachhta Survey, and Surat has been utilizing these machines for many years.
Of the existing sweeper machines, 8 are operated on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, while the remaining 20 are owned and maintained by the Municipal Corporation. However, 8 machines have aged and need replacement. With the city expanding, increasing the number of machines is essential.
The new proposal includes purchasing 16 sweeper machines and contracting their operation and maintenance for seven years, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 130 crore. The Standing Committee is expected to make a decision on this proposal soon.
This initiative is a significant step towards keeping Surat city clean and healthy.
