GST Seva Kendras Reduce Fake Registrations by 25% in Gujarat

Gandhinagar : The introduction of GST Seva Kendras in Gujarat has significantly curbed fake GST registration applications. Within the last seven months, the number of GST registration applications has dropped by an average of 25% compared to the previous financial year.

Aiming to make the Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration process more transparent and to prevent tax evasion, 12 GST Seva Kendras were launched across Gujarat on November 7, 2023. Modeled after Passport Seva Kendras, these centers consolidate all GST registration processes into a single, efficient location. As a result, the number of GST registration applications has seen a notable decrease.

According to the Gujarat State Tax Department, prior to this initiative, tax evasion was rampant through fake GST registrations using falsified documents. The mandatory biometric registration at GST Seva Kendras now ensures that the original applicant is verified. Each application undergoes scrutiny based on over 40 parameters at a single center before a GST Identification Number (GSTIN) is issued. This process has made GST registration more secure, transparent, and swift.

The Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the GST Seva Kendras from Vapi on November 7, 2023. These centers are currently operational in Vapi, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Godhra, Mehsana, Palanpur, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Junagadh, and Gandhidham.

Gujarat is the first state in India to establish GST Seva Kendras. The success of these centers has prompted plans to implement this system nationwide. The 25% reduction in GST registration applications highlights the effectiveness of these centers. Members of the GST Council and officials from other states, such as Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, have visited these centers to observe their operations.
