Surat's Tapi River Barrage Project Gains Momentum

Surat – The ambitious barrage project on the Tapi River, aimed at meeting the drinking water needs of Surat's expanding population, is gaining momentum. The Surat Municipal Corporation has secured 76 necessary approvals and completed extensive mathematical and physical model studies.

Project Highlights:

  • Population Growth: Surat's population is projected to grow to 1.17 crore by 2033 and 2.27 crore by 2048.
  • Reservoir Capacity: The proposed barrage will store 18.735 MCM of water, creating a massive lake-like reservoir in the Tapi River. For comparison, the Weir cum Causeway built in 1995 can store 31 MCM of water.

Studies and Approvals:

Extensive studies, including hydrography, topography surveys, soil investigations, flood estimations, and environmental assessments, have been conducted for the barrage's construction. The government has approved these studies.

Design and Proof Checking:

  • The barrage's design is being handled by Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL).
  • The Central Water Commission (CWC) will conduct proof checks on the designs.
  • The Design Circle of Roads & Buildings (R&B) will proof-check the design of the adjoining bridge.

Construction Work:

With the mathematical and physical model studies completed, final design work and design proof-checking are expected to conclude soon, paving the way for construction to commence.

Benefits:

The barrage will provide long-term water security for Surat city, catering to the drinking water needs of its growing population. Additionally, it will support agricultural and industrial development in the region.

The Surat Barrage Project stands as a crucial infrastructure initiative for the city, ensuring water security and fostering regional development. As construction work nears commencement, the project promises significant benefits for Surat's future.
