India to Enforce Uniform Civil Code Within 5 Years: Amit Shah
Delhi, 26 May (H.S): union Home Minister Amit Shah has recently announced that a Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in the country within the next five years, if the BJP returns to power. This decision comes after extensive consultations with all stakeholders, including legal scholars and religious leaders.
Shah also mentioned that in the next term, the government will work towards implementing ?One Nation, One Election? to reduce costs and bring about more efficiency in the election process. When asked about the possibility of changing the timing of elections to avoid the scorching heat, Shah stated that it is a matter that can be considered and discussed.
The UCC has been a part of the BJP's agenda since the 1950s and it was recently implemented in Uttarakhand. Shah believes that this move towards a Uniform Civil Code is a significant social, legal, and religious reform that requires extensive debate and consultation with all stakeholders. He also highlighted the responsibility left by the makers of our Constitution to have a Uniform Civil Code in a secular country.
With a majority government in Uttarakhand, the BJP has done an experiment on implementing the UCC at a state level and will now focus on its implementation at a national level.
