SC Orders Deportation of 17 Foreigners from Assam Detention Centre
Delhi, 16 May (H.S): The Supreme Court of India has directed the union of India to take immediate action in deporting 17 foreigners who have been languishing in a detention centre in Assam. The court noted that there is no offence registered against these individuals and therefore, they should be deported as soon as possible. This decision was made after the State Legal Services Authority submitted a report stating the presence of 17 declared foreigners in the detention centre.
In April, the top court had directed the legal services authority to gather information about foreigners who have been detained for more than two years and also to assess the facilities provided to them. This order came after the court learned that numerous individuals have been held in detention centres for several years.
The Supreme Court is currently hearing a plea seeking the release of individuals who have completed more than two years in detention centres in Assam. This decision by the apex court highlights the need for timely and just action in cases involving foreigners in India.
