G-20 Energy Transition Working Group Holds Second Meeting in Gandhinagar

The second Energy Transition Working Group (ETWG) meeting under India's G-20 chairmanship commenced in Gandhinagar. Union Minister of State for AYUSH and Women and Child Development, Dr. Munjpara Mahendrabhai Kalubhai, delivered a keynote address emphasizing India's G-20 Chairmanship commitment to addressing global warming, climate change, and energy security. He highlighted the need for innovative technology research and development to promote clean energy and ensure its cost-effectiveness and reliability.

Over 100 delegates from G-20 member countries, specially invited countries, and international organizations, including the International Energy Agency (IEA), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNISCAP), European Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and International Solar Alliance (ISA) attended the meeting.

The Union Minister underscored the importance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Jeevan Abhiyan' or 'Lifestyle Campaign for Environment,' urging individuals and communities to lead a global mass movement for resource conservation and environmental protection.

Alok Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India, stressed the need for G20 members to recognize joint action for equitable, shared, and inclusive growth. He encouraged member countries to cooperate and foster a spirit of trusteeship for a clean energy transition. Kumar also highlighted major Government of India schemes, including the Green Hydrogen Mission, Energy Transition, Energy Storage Projects, Renewable Energy Extraction, Green Credit Programme, PM-PRANAM, Gobardhan Yojana, Indian Natural Farming Bio-input Resource Centre, Mishti Are, Misty, Amrit Dharohar, Coastal Shipping, and Vehicle Replacement.

The meeting focused on six priority areas: energy transition bridging the technology gap, low-cost financing for energy transition, energy security and diverse supply chains, energy efficiency, industrial low-carbon transition and responsible consumption, and future fuel and universal access to clean energy. A seminar on the Global Green Hydrogen Ecosystem - Enabling Net Zero Pathway was organized as a side event. Delegates also visited GIFT City in Gandhinagar during the second ETWG meeting.

Four ETWG meetings, various co-events, and a ministerial meeting have been held under India's chairmanship to advance global cooperation in clean energy transition and position it at the center of the sustainable economic development agenda.
