Indian Navy Creates History: Women Officers Complete Historic Transoceanic Expedition
Goa, India: The Indian Navy has etched its name in history books after two of its women officers, Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Rupa Adhikari, successfully completed a historic transoceanic expedition aboard the INSV Tarini. This remarkable feat marks the first time any country has achieved such an accomplishment with an all-woman, double-handed crew.
The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini embarked on its journey from Goa on February 28th. After a challenging yet rewarding 22-day voyage across the Indian Ocean, the vessel reached Port Louis, Mauritius on March 21st. The momentous occasion was celebrated with interactions between the officers and Mauritian dignitaries, including Coast Guard officials and representatives from the Indian High Commission. The crew also participated in a joint training sortie with the Mauritius Coast Guard, strengthening ties and fostering goodwill between the two maritime nations.
Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Rupa Adhikari displayed exceptional seamanship and unwavering determination throughout the expedition. They skillfully navigated the vast ocean, overcoming adverse weather conditions and the inherent challenges of a long-distance voyage. Their return journey from Port Louis on March 30th presented further obstacles in the form of strong winds and rough seas. However, their indomitable spirit and exceptional skills ensured the safe return of the INSV Tarini to Goa on April 21st.
The return of the INSV Tarini was met with a warm welcome from the Naval Station Commander, North Goa, and the Commanding Officer of INS Mandovi. Naval personnel and their families gathered at the boat pool to celebrate this collective achievement, a testament to the camaraderie within the Indian Navy.
Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Rupa Adhikari's historic voyage is not the end of the journey. They are currently gearing up for the prestigious "Vishwa Parikrama" (global circumnavigation) expedition with the INSV Tarini, scheduled for September 2024. This upcoming voyage will undoubtedly inspire future generations of Indian Navy personnel to embrace the spirit of adventure and excel in challenging maritime endeavors.
