Hockey India Announces 33-Member Women's Core Group for Upcoming Tournaments

Bengaluru, India - April 8th: Hockey India (HI) unveiled a 33-member shortlist for the Indian women's hockey team on Monday. These players will continue training at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in Bengaluru until May 16th.

The shortlisted group was selected from a larger 60-member assessment camp that began on April 1st. Following selection trials held on April 6th and 7th, the core group was formed.

National Exposure and International Competition:

These 33 players will compete for spots in upcoming coaching camps and international exposure tours. Notably, the team will travel to Antwerp and London later this year to participate in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24, facing Argentina, Belgium, Germany, and Great Britain.

Notable Selections and Returns:

The shortlist includes several exciting prospects. Marina Lalramnaghaki (22) and Manisha Chauhan (25), who impressed at the recent National Championship representing Hockey Mizoram and Hockey Manipur respectively, secured their places in the core group. Additionally, veteran forward Preeti Dubey, who last played for India in the 2017 Hockey World League semi-finals, made a successful comeback after a strong showing at the assessment camp.

Changes and Looking Ahead:

However, the shortlist also saw some departures. Goalkeeper Madhuri Kindo, defenders Ropani Kumari and Preeti, midfielder Edula Jyoti, and forwards Deepika Soreng and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal will step down from the junior Indian team competing in the FIH Hockey Women's Junior World Cup 2023.

Expressing optimism for the team's potential, Hockey India High Performance Director Herman Cruz stated, "We have a promising group selected, and they will gain valuable experience through upcoming international tours and the FIH Hockey Pro League."
