Taipei, Taiwan - A powerful earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck Taiwan's east coast on Wednesday morning, causing significant disruption and damage. The temblor, the strongest to hit the island nation in 25 years, triggered the suspension of the Taiwan High Speed Rail network and raised concerns of potential tsunamis.
The epicenter of the earthquake, located roughly 18 kilometers south of Hualien city, sent shockwaves rippling across the entire country. Images and videos emerging from Hualien depict a scene of devastation, with several buildings partially collapsed and leaning precariously.
According to Taiwan News, the Taiwan High Speed Rail Network (THSR) suspended operations following the quake as a precautionary measure. The THSR apologized for any inconvenience caused to passengers and implemented an emergency response center to inspect tracks, stations, and other critical infrastructure.
Tsunami warnings were issued in Taiwan and neighboring countries, including Japan, as seismological officials cautioned of potential aftershocks. The United States Geological Survey confirmed the epicenter's location in the waters off Hualien County, while Taiwan's Central Meteorological Administration also recorded the powerful tremor.
