Gujarat University to House Foreign Students in Separate Hostel After Assault Incident
University administration takes action after Afghan student attacked over prayer space dispute
Ahmedabad: Gujarat University (GU) has announced plans to move all foreign students to a separate hostel following a recent assault on an Afghan student. The decision comes amidst concerns about the safety and well-being of international students living on campus.
The incident, which stemmed from a dispute over a prayer space, has prompted swift action from both the university administration and the state government. Previously, all international students were housed alongside domestic students in general hostels. While GU has a designated NRI hostel, its use had been delayed due to pending paperwork.
Following a high-level meeting with Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi, university officials have prioritized the NRI hostel's refurbishment. GU has committed to moving all foreign students to NRI Hostel G-9 within the next three days. Additionally, a new management team has been appointed for the hostel, with Ashok Chavda taking over as Warden and Dr. Kapil Kumar serving as Coordinator. The university's Estate Officer has also been transferred, with Gajendra Patel assuming the role in an acting capacity.
As part of its ongoing efforts, Gujarat University has announced the formation of a Foreign Student Advisory Committee. This committee will serve as a dedicated resource for international students, addressing their concerns and ensuring their safety on campus.
