India Poised to Become Top Chip Hub: First Chips by December 2024

India is set to emerge as a major player in the global semiconductor industry, with production from its first chip plant expected to begin by December 2024. This ambitious goal was announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav during the foundation stone laying ceremony of chip plants by Tata Group and CG Power in Dholera, Gujarat.

The ceremony, virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks a significant step towards India's vision of becoming a top five chip-making hub by 2029. The Dholera plant, spearheaded by Tata Electronics in partnership with Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp, will be the country's first high-tech chip manufacturing facility.

Highlighting the importance of semiconductors, Minister Vaishnav emphasized their role as a "core" industry, impacting everything from daily appliances to advanced technology in transportation. The initial chips produced at Dholera will be manufactured in 28, 50, and 55 nanometer nodes, laying the groundwork for future advancements.

Prime Minister Modi, addressing the event virtually, underscored India's readiness to become a major semiconductor manufacturing hub. He emphasized that these facilities, representing a total investment of Rs 1.26 lakh crore, will not only boost economic growth but also fuel innovation across various sectors.
