Prime Minister Modi Launches Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Redevelopment Project on Dandi March Day
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel Hails Project as Symbol of Gandhian Ideals and National Pride
Ahmedabad, March 12 - Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Redevelopment Project during the 'Ashram Bhoomi Vandana' program at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, marking the occasion of Dandi March Day. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the redeveloped Kochrab Ashram on the same day.
In his welcome address, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel praised Mahatma Gandhi's historic march to Dandi on March 12, 1930, which ignited the freedom movement against British rule. He highlighted the significance of launching the redevelopment project on the same land where Gandhi had initiated the struggle for India's independence.
Patel described Sabarmati Ashram as a hub of creativity, fundamental principles, and Satyagraha, where many decisions of the freedom movement were made. He expressed confidence that the redevelopment project would transform the ashram into a modern pilgrimage site and a beacon of Gandhian ideals.
The Chief Minister noted that Prime Minister Modi had proposed the reconstruction of Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram during his visit in 2021, which is now being realized. He emphasized that the project would preserve and promote the core values and essence of Gandhian philosophy in a contemporary manner, contributing to the heritage and global dissemination of Gandhian ideas.
The land acquisition process for the project was completed without legal intervention, thanks to effective communication and cooperation with ashram residents and trustees. Patel thanked the Central Government for its financial support of the new campus, which spans 55 acres and costs Rs 1200 crore.
The project aims to enhance the identity of Sabarmati Ashram and its surroundings, providing modern facilities for visitors and tourists. It includes the construction of a world-class temple dedicated to Gandhiji, which will serve as a memorial and inspiration for future generations. The complex will feature informative exhibitions on Gandhi's life and the ashram's legacy, as well as interactive displays on Satyagraha and the freedom struggle. Additionally, the project will conserve 20 old houses, renovate 13 houses, and redevelop 3 houses while maintaining the simplicity and authenticity of the main ashram.
Several dignitaries, including Tourism Minister Mulubhai, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi, and Rajya Sabha MP Narharibhai Amin, attended the inauguration ceremony. The project launch was also attended by Gandhians, Swachhagrahis, and a large number of people, reflecting the significance of Sabarmati Ashram in India's heritage and the continuing relevance of Gandhian principles.
