Cochlear Implants Made More Accessible: Gujarat CM Reduces Beneficiary Contribution
Ahmedabad, March 10: In a move aimed at improving child healthcare, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has significantly reduced the financial burden on families seeking cochlear implant processors for their children.
Reduced Contribution and Support for Past Beneficiaries
Previously, families had to contribute 50% of the cost of the cochlear implant processor. Under the new guidelines, this contribution has been slashed to just 10%. This will make these life-changing devices more accessible to children with hearing loss. Additionally, for families who previously covered the full cost of cochlear implants themselves (without government assistance), those with an annual income below Rs. 4 lakh can now avail the 10% subsidized processor.
Travel Assistance for Specialized Treatment
Furthermore, Chief Minister Patel has announced that beneficiaries of the Shala Arogya program referred to Ahmedabad for super-specialty treatment will receive travel allowances based on state transport fares. This will help offset travel costs associated with receiving necessary medical care.
Improved Access to Critical Care
The estimated cost of a cochlear implant surgery under the Shala Arogya program is Rs. 7 lakh, with the state government already spending over Rs. 214 crore on 3,061 such operations. With around 200 children currently in need of processors (estimated cost of Rs. 3 lakh each), these child-friendly decisions by CM Patel will significantly improve access to vital cochlear implant technology.
