India Thump England by an Innings and 64 Runs, Clinch Series 4-1
Ashwin Stars with Nine Wickets in Landmark 100th Test
Dharamsala (March 9, 2024): India wrapped up a dominant victory against England in the fifth and final Test, winning by an innings and 64 runs on day three at Dharamsala. This emphatic win sealed the five-match series 4-1 in India's favor.
England's Batting Collapses Twice
England, after electing to bat first, were bundled out for a meager 218 runs. Jack Crowley's 79 was a lone bright spot as Indian spinners Kuldeep Yadav (five wickets) and Ravichandran Ashwin (four wickets) ran riot.
India responded with a mammoth 477 runs in their first innings, taking a commanding lead of 259 runs. Centuries from openers Rohit Sharma (103) and Shubman Gill (110) set the tone, while fifties from Yashasvi Jaiswal (57), Devdutt Padikkal (65), and Sarfaraz Khan (56) bolstered the total. England's Shoaib Bashir was the pick of their bowlers with a five-wicket haul.
England's second innings was even more dismal as they were dismissed for just 195 runs. Only Joe Root (84) offered any resistance, while the rest of the batting lineup crumbled. Ashwin, celebrating his 100th Test, continued his stellar performance, picking up another five wickets. Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah chipped in with two wickets each.
Ashwin's Memorable 100th Test
The victory was extra special for Ashwin, who achieved a remarkable personal milestone - his 100th Test match. He marked the occasion with a match-winning bowling performance, taking a total of nine wickets (four in the first innings and five in the second).
