Ahmedabad : Sabarmati Railway Station to Become Multi-Modal Hub, Honor Gandhi's Legacy

Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad is undergoing a major transformation, aiming to become a multi-modal transport hub while preserving its historical significance. Western Railway officials recently shared details of the project, emphasizing the station's future as a central point for various modes of transportation, including railways, metro, high-speed rail, and city bus services.

The design incorporates symbolic references to Mahatma Gandhi, reflecting Sabarmati's deep association with the Father of the Nation and his ashram. Images of Gandhi and objects like the charkha (spinning wheel) and khadi fabric will serve as constant reminders of his ideals.

The redevelopment plan focuses on integrating the station complex with surrounding infrastructure, creating a seamless experience for passengers. The project will feature separate concourses for regular passengers, VIPs, and women, along with dedicated waiting rooms. Additionally, 28 escalators, 28 lifts, 26 staircases, 2 skywalks, and 4 foot-over bridges will ensure easy access to all platforms. Passengers can also expect hassle-free movement within the station with dedicated lanes for pedestrians and vehicles.

To accommodate future ridership projections, the project includes plans for expansion on both the SBI and SBT sides of the station. Notably, the master plan identifies dedicated areas for commercial development, offering revenue opportunities for the railways and attracting businesses to the vicinity.

The redevelopment also takes into account the upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project. A dedicated station for the high-speed line is planned between SBI's future platform 9 and SBT's platform 3, further enhancing Sabarmati's connectivity.

This ambitious project aims to transform Sabarmati Station into a modern, integrated transport hub that honors Ahmedabad's rich heritage while catering to the growing needs of passengers and the city's development.
